Hundreds of pupils who go to Anderton Park school in Birmingham did not attend because of a protest against lessons which teach same-sex relationships and gender identity.
There has been increasing tension in the local community after weeks of demonstrations by parents who say the classes contradict their religious beliefs and others who support them.
It resulted in an angry argument between a Labour MP and a protester.
