This week’s flypast over Buckingham Palace of warplanes past and present, was a huge national occasion to celebrate the RAF’s centenary.
Away from the crowds, though, the work of those enthusiasts who keep alive the memory of the very first fighter planes, often goes unnoticed.
They enable us to admire the sheer aerial grace of these fragile two- or three-winged aircraft.
But, 100 years ago, going to war for your country in them was tantamount to volunteering for a death sentence.
