The spire of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris along with much of its roof has collapsed amid a raging fire that has devastated one of France’s most iconic landmarks.
France’s Interior Ministry said firefighters might not be able to save the structure as the blaze spread to one of the cathedral’s famous rectangular bell towers.
The entire wooden interior of the 850-year-old Gothic building is burning, threatening to completely destroy it, according to a church spokesperson.
The emergency services are trying to salvage the priceless artwork stored in the cathedral, although some were moved earlier this week as part of restoration work.
The deputy mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, says Notre Dame Cathedral has suffered “colossal damages”.
French president, Emmanuel Macron, has cancelled a scheduled televised address to the nation to travel to the scene where he is meeting senior police officers.
