There were signs the battle over the Brexit backstop could be set to soften.
But the European leader – often referred to as the “hard man” of the EU negotiations – toughened up the message once again.
The French president told Boris Johnson at meetings in Paris that a new withdrawal agreement cannot be quickly agreed, saying the controversial Irish backstop is “indispensable”.
“No it’s not” said the Prime Minister, standing by his demand that it must be scrapped in order to do a deal.
