The Las Vegas shooting and America’s relationship with guns explained

A “sick man, a demented man.” Those were the words Donald Trump used to describe Stephen Paddock, who killed 59 people and injured more than 500 in Las Vegas.

What detectives are struggling to understand is Paddock’s motivation. Why did the 64-year-old amass an arsenal of more than 20 weapons in his 32nd-storey hotel room and turn them on thousands of people gathered below who were watching the finale of a country music festival?

As the day has progressed, more of the names of those who were killed yesterday have been made public. The massacre has once again sparked calls among liberal commentators for tighter controls on firearms. But many of those who support President Trump refuse any compromise on gun regulation.
