The Moon landing at 50: Man’s greatest leap into the unknown

It’s 50 years since the world took one giant leap for mankind – and stepped out on the surface of the moon.

Some 650 million people watched around the world as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed the Apollo Lunar module Eagle and planted the American flag on the moon.

No space event has equalled it since. But with plans afoot to travel to Mars, will this generation have its own moon landing moment?
