Trump policy leaves thousands of asylum seekers trapped in Mexico

In January 2019, Donald Trump’s administration introduced a policy which forces asylum seekers to wait in Mexican cities for their applications to be processed before they can enter the US.

The programme, called the Migrant Protection Protocols, was heavily criticised by the American Civil Liberties Union, saying it had “nothing to do with protecting people and everything to do with making it impossible for migrants to get the humanitarian protection they are entitled to”.

These asylum seekers live in hope that lawyers and volunteers will help to fight their case, while they remain trapped in unsafe areas across the border.
