How an amateur archaeologist’s discovery has been made into a film | ITV News

When an amateur archeologist stuck a spade into the ground and unearthed the greatest archaeological discovery ever made in this country it was like something out of a film. Well now it is one.

The Dig stars Carey Mulligan, Lily James and Rafe Fines. It tells the human story, from the pre-war summer of 1939, of how an Anglo-Saxon burial ship was found at Sutton Hoo, a few miles inland from what is now the coastline of Suffolk.

The sophisticated treasure found on board changed the way we think about our 7th century forebears.
