UK to have crunch talks with French over migrant crossings, Chancellor confirms

The UK will hold crunch talks with French authorities over the growing crisis over migrant crossings, as the Government comes under pressure to act.

Rishi Sunak said that Chris Philip, the immigration minister, would be going to France next week and “pending the outcome of those discussions we can decide what measures should take place”.

He declined to comment on the Telegraph’s report that Priti Patel is poised to deploy the Navy but said dealing with the issue was “a priority for us”.

Yesterday a group of MPs launched an inquiry into the increase in the number of people trying to enter the UK by using small boats to cross the English Channel, after more than 1,000 migrants arrived in the UK last month. A record number of people made the crossing yesterday.
